Start Challange
A composition without a clear entry point can feel confusing and directionless. The viewer’s eye might wander aimlessly, missing the story you intended to tell. Entry point brings purpose and structure, guiding the gaze from the very first glance. This challenge will help you create stronger engagement by learning to lead the viewer’s eye with intention.
By understanding how to place focal points, frame them effectively, and control focus, you’ll turn passive observation into guided visual storytelling that instantly pulls the viewer into your artwork.

Exercise – Creating a Strong Entry Point
Now that you understand the importance of a strong entry point, it’s time to apply it. The goal is to train your eye to direct attention immediately and intentionally.
Start by sketching three small and quick thumbnails (10 minutes each). Try to keep your sketches simple—focus on eye direction and structure rather than details. Each thumbnail should incorporate at least two of the following techniques:
.webp)
- Focal Point
- Place a clear subject where the eye naturally lands first—this could be through central placement, strong contrast, or isolation in the frame. Your focal point should act as the doorway into the scene.

- Framing
- Use surrounding elements—like windows, branches, light beams, or shapes—to subtly frame your entry point and keep attention centered where you want it.

- Focus
- Apply clarity, contrast, or texture selectively to the entry point while keeping other areas more simplified or blurred, naturally drawing the viewer’s eye toward the intended spot.
Self-Feedback
Now, analyze your sketches and reflect on how effectively you’ve created a strong entry point. Answer these questions honestly to refine your approach:
- 1. Is it immediately clear where the eye should begin?
- ________________
- 2. Do framing elements support the focal point or create distractions?
- ________________
- 3. Is the entry point reinforced by clarity, contrast, or position?
- ________________
- 4. Does the composition flow naturally from the entry point outward?
- _______________
Take your time, evaluate your work, and choose the thumbnail that best represents a strong, focused entry point. You’re guiding your viewer with intention—keep building!
