Exercise – Build Your Visual Hierarchy
Now that you understand the concept of visual hierarchy, it’s time to apply it in a practical exercise. The goal is to train your eye to lead the viewer through the artwork, emphasizing what’s most important and simplifying the rest.
Start by sketching three small and quick thumbnails (10 minutes each). Try to keep your sketches simple—focus on structure and emphasis rather than details. Each thumbnail should incorporate at least two of the following hierarchy techniques:

- Contrast
- Apply light vs. dark, sharp vs. soft, or saturated vs. muted values to push the main subject forward.

- 1. Does the main subject stand out clearly as the focal point?
- ________________
- 2. Do supporting elements enhance the focal point without overpowering it?
- ________________
- 3. Is contrast used effectively to separate focal areas from the rest?
- ________________
- 4. If viewed quickly or from a distance, does the hierarchy still read clearly?
